A group of 30 Cadets and students from Cockshut Hill School, Lyndon School and Ninestiles, an Academy, all part of the Summit Learning Trust, recently had an unforgettable experience, courtesy of the Royal Navy’s Attract Team.
At the end of September the group visited Portsmouth’s historic Naval base and toured HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier. The visit offered them the opportunity to immerse themselves in Naval life and learn more about the inner workings of one of the most advanced warships in the world. As they boarded HMS Queen Elizabeth, the largest and most powerful ship ever constructed for the Royal Navy, their excitement was palpable.
During the tour, the learners were given an exclusive look into various aspects of life aboard the vessel. They explored key areas of the ship, including the control room, where officers monitor and manage everything from navigation to communications. This behind-the-scenes glimpse allowed them to see how decisions are made on the high seas and how technology is employed to ensure the smooth operation of the ship.
They also had the unique opportunity to try their hand at one of the vital operations aboard the ship—operating the hose on the flight deck. This interactive experience gave them a small taste of the responsibilities crew members undertake as part of fire safety and emergency protocols.
For many of the learners, the trip was an eye-opener into potential careers within the Royal Navy. Witnessing the teamwork, dedication, and precision required to operate a vessel of such scale sparked an interest in Naval engineering, logistics, and life as a sailor. “It’s amazing to see all of this up close,” one learner remarked, “and it makes you think about how much effort and coordination goes into every mission.”
The tour of HMS Queen Elizabeth was not only educational but also an inspirational experience. Many of the learners expressed a newfound respect for the Royal Navy and the personnel who serve aboard these ships. They were able to see first-hand the various roles that ensure the Navy operates as a well-oiled machine, from those on the flight deck to the crew members in the engine rooms and bridge.
The Royal Navy Attract Team, who organised the visit, aim to inspire young people from across the UK by offering insights into naval careers and encouraging interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects. With Portsmouth being home to some of the Navy’s most impressive ships, the visit was part of the Royal Navy’s outreach efforts to engage with young people, particularly in regions like Birmingham that are geographically distant from the sea.
As the day came to a close, the students left Portsmouth with memories that will last a lifetime. From stepping onto the flight deck of the HMS Queen Elizabeth to exploring the heart of the ship’s operations, they gained a deeper understanding of naval life and its challenges and rewards. It was a day filled with adventure, learning, and a glimpse into a world few get to experience.
The visit undoubtedly sparked an interest in many of these Birmingham teens, potentially igniting a passion for the Royal Navy or careers in related fields, showing them that the sky’s the limit—or in this case, the sea.

We always want our learners to be thinking about all the possibilities that are open to them and this trip was really helpful in demonstrating to learners the breadth of careers that the Royal Navy can offer.”
Malak, a Year 10 learner said: “The visit to Portsmouth was so good. Our guide was amazing and gave us lots of information about the vessel. The ship was enormous. We went to see the sleeping quarters and on the deck where we saw the fighter jets and helicopter. I recommend this trip to other students if they ever get the chance to go, it was truly a remarkable experience. It has made me think about joining the Navy as a medic in the future.”
Warrant Officer One Rich Cartman from the Royal Navy Attract Team said: “It was an absolute privilege to bring leaners from the Summit Learning Trust to experience life onboard HMS Queen Elizabeth and showcase what wonderful career opportunities there are, and develop their understanding of the Royal Navy.”
Lieutenant Commander Suzanne Lynch OiC Royal Navy Attract Team Central said: “We have a great relationship with Summit Learning Trust and really enjoy working with their talented learners. It was fantastic to be able to take them to visit our Flagship and bring alive our maritime environment. They got to see where we work, how we live and understand the complexity of our jobs and the challenges of working at sea. It was a great day, and brilliant to see the young people interact with the sailors and marines onboard.”
Summit Learning Trust have established many supportive links with the Armed Forces and the wider forces community over the past few years. In June the Trust officially launched an Army Cadet Force detachment for their students. This month the Trust will also receive their Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award for their exemplary support and advocacy to the Armed Forces community.
