Eight Army Reserve Centres in our region are helping to reduce their carbon footprint after the installation of new EV Chargers at their sites.
The project, managed by our Estates team and overseen by our Estates Officer Soft FM, saw secure plug-in charging stations installed at each centre to charge the unit’s official military vehicles and white fleet.
Working in conjunction with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation and our contractors, each site first had to undergo analysis and load tests to ascertain the electrical capacity. This information was then used to shape how many 7kw or 22kw vehicle chargers could be safely installed and used at each Reserve Centre.
A greener fleet
The benefits of using the new chargers with electric vehicles include:
– Improved air quality with zero carbon emissions
– Reduction in noise pollution
– Can be more cost effective to maintain over the vehicle lifetime
– Convenience of on-site charging
On-site charging benefits
Dawley Bank Army Reserve Centre is one site to embrace using the new charging stations, with three units on site able to use the chargers.
“We currently have two Peugeot 208 electric vehicles that were included in the fleet in 2023,” explained one of the units. “Until the EV chargers were installed at Dawley Bank, we had to rely on public charging stations.
“This proved to be very inconvenient as our members would have to drive to Shifnal Services, whereby they would find a queue for the chargers. This would result in a short amount of time left to partially charge a vehicle, or have to drive away again without charging due to time-constraints. Our electric vehicles could not be utilised properly, and we were essentially two vehicles down.
“With the six EV chargers now installed at Dawley Bank, our electric vehicles are continuously charged and ready to go meaning that they are great assets for the team. The extra charging points allows for a future-proofed EV charging facility once electric vehicles are acquired within the unit fleets.”
The project is part of our Association’s ongoing work towards the MOD’s sustainability and net zero aims.
Responsible for the maintenance of 30 Reserve Centres and 115 Cadet centres (including four CTCs) in our region, our Estates team ensure that the Reserve Forces and Cadets are provided with high quality, efficient and modern facilities in order to work and train.
