In early March we hosted an inspiring International Women’s Day event at HMS Forward, bringing together local organisations, military personnel and community networks to celebrate the incredible contributions of women in our Armed Forces and business communities.
The day focussed on championing the achievements, skills and lived experiences of women, while opening up space for powerful conversations around gender equality and women’s issues.
Our host and motivational speaker Zoe Bennett, guided us through the day’s thought-provoking sessions, kicking off with keynote speeches from Colonel Lorna Ward, Assistant Commander Reserves for the Army Headquarters Centre, and Lisa Capper MBE, CEO and Principals at Sandwell College.
After hearing their inspiring stories, our speakers were invited to take part in a lively panel discussion along with Sub-Lieutenant Laura Harpham, a Reservist from HMS Forward, Vanessa Kelly, Founder of 2 Much Passion CIC, Dawn Turner, Founder and CEO at Stepway CIC, and Rebecca Pritchett, a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer with the RAF Air Cadets.
Together they explored this year’s global theme – Accelerating Action – delving into:
- Progress in gender equality
- Pathways and opportunities in the Armed Forces
- The impact of strong female leadership in business
- Defining what success looks like today
- The importance of women supporting one another in the workplace
We extend our sincere thanks to Zoe, our brilliant speakers and panellists, the HMS Forward team and our guests for making the day such a success. A special thank you to 2 Much Passion CIC for providing a delicious lunch!
